RSS Feeds on our Websites
You’ve probably noticed a button with RSS displayed on many websites, including The Chef Alliance’s portfolio of sites. So what is this button for?
RSS (Rich Site Summary) is a way for you to remain informed about the latest content changes in your favourite websites. It is an extremely simple, yet powerful, tool that will improve how you receive information, saving you time and effort.
For example, The Chef Alliance has installed RSS feed applications to our job postings. It will allow Chefs to receive AUTOMATIC updates on new job postings in their preferred locations without ever going to the website!
It is as easy as clicking on the RSS icon on the page. After you click on it, you will be asked to make the selection of how you want to subscribe to that feed. This can depend on what sort of feed reader you are using, and your personal preference. Below, is a brief outline of the ways to subscribe to RSS feeds.
RSS FEED READERS!?
A feed reader, or aggregator, is an application that pulls the content from the subscribed feeds and displays the content. There are different kinds of feed readers: Online, Desktop-Based, and ones available as Built-In feed readers.
Online Feed Readers
If you want to read all your feeds from within your browser, you will want a web-based feed reader. Some of the web-based feed readers are bloglines, Google Reader, Yahoo & Newsgator. Online feed readers are very convenient to setup, but it means yet another set of login information to keep track of.
Desktop Feed Readers
These are installed right onto your desktop and usually come with more features than the online feed readers. To name a few desktop feed readers : FeedDemon, RSS Bandit & BlogBridge. Although they have lots of features to play around with, as soon as a new feed comes in, all the features that you may have been working with will be deleted.
Built - In Readers
These readers are built right into the browser and your email clients, and are the most convenient. The Mozilla Firefox browser automatically enables you to add RSS feeds to your ‘Favourites’ folder creating “Live Bookmarks”. Apple Computer added RSS support in the version of Safari bundled with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and higher. Microsoft also has RSS support for IE7. An easy option would be to use your existing email client (e.g. Microsoft Outlook) to subscribe to the RSS feeds.
